Notes

From Robert A. Herring, MD, p. 2, "That the name is among the very early colonists to Virginia is evidenced by the name of John Herring, age 28, as among those sailing from London on the ship, "Alexander", May 2, 1635, to the Virginia colony. In a history of Isle of Wight County the name John Herring appears in connection with a land transaction in that county under date of November 9, 1679; and the names of John Herring, Sr., and John Herring, Jr., appear in the index of wills and inventories of Isle of Wight County covering the period 1660-1730. One John Herring died in 1672 in Isle of Wight County; this could be the grandfather but not the father of John Herring [1684-1760] of the Herring line, since his birth is recorded as in 1684, which, from all the information at hand, is correct." So...what was the name of John Herring's [1684-1760] father...since his grandfather John Herring1 [1607-1672] died 12 years before he was born?
