Notes

See pp. 4-5 of Robert Al, Herrin, MD book on Herring history. He suggests her maiden name was likely, although not proven, to be Marbe. "Summed up, the above records indicate definitely that the wife of John Herring was namedCatherine, though there is no record to show what her family namewas. A point of possible collateral significance in this connection, however, is contained in the deed recorded in ChowanCounty deed book 1, p. 398, 1716, assigning 150 acres of land to "John Herring of Isle of Wight County, Virginia" by George and Catherine Marbe on October 18, 1715. Since the deed contains the word "assigns" instead of "sells" or "conveys", it could be assumed that the conveyance of this property was a gift; and, if so, possibly by the parents of the wife of their son-in—lawat or near the time of their marriage. John Herring would have reached marriageable age shortly before the year l7l5. Further, the parallel namesCatherine Marbe and the name ”Cathuren” or "Catrina" appearing as the probable wife of John Herring indicates the possibility that Catherine Marbewas the mother of ”Cathuren” or "Catrina Herring" and that the maiden name of the wife of ‘John Herring was Marbe. There is no evidence to prove this, and the above commentsare offered only as suggestive material bearing upon the maiden name of the wife of John Herring.
